Things to do on Ibiza

IbizaIf we think about Ibiza we think about sun, beach and parties! Ibiza is however much more than sun, beach, and partying. Besides the clubs there are also numerous sights to visit. We have gathered the most beautiful sights of Ibiza for you. You will know exactly what you need to have seen when you pay a visit to Ibiza.

Dalt Vila

Ibiza Town is a beautiful place to stay or pay a visit to. One of the highlights of the city is the old historical heart: Dalt Vila. Around the old city centre are the original city walls. The walls and Dalt Vila are officially listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the buildings in the old city is Cathedral de la Verge de les Neus. This cathedral was built in the sixteenth century in typical Catalonian style. In the cathedral there are different works of art from that time period to be admired. From the cathedral you have a wonderful panoramic view overlooking the city. In Dalt Vila there is also an archeological museum to be found. Different findings from the history of Ibiza are to be found in this museum. The museum knows an impressive collection with items dating back from Roman times.

Hippy market

If you are going on a holiday to Ibiza then you should have at least seen one Hippy market. The Hippy markets are organised in different areas of the island. During high season, you can find a hippy market somewhere on the island every day. If you look hard enough you will still find real hippies on the hippy markets. Most hippies make the jewellery, clothing and accessories that they are selling themselves. The biggest market is every Wednesday in Es Caná. The market is from April to October from 10 am to 7 pm. On the market children can make their own souvenir. In the hold harbour of Ibiza Town you can find a hippy market every night in the narrow alleyways of the city. This market starts late in the afternoon and goes on till midnight.

Las Salinas

One of the most famous sights on Ibiza is Las Salinas. These are the famous salt flats that are used for more than 2000 years. You are best off reaching the salt flats by car. They are located in the south of the island. In the winter the salt flats are usually underwater. In the warm summer months the water evaporates and salt is what is left. Las Salinas is a beautiful place to take pictures, especially when the sun is setting the light is spectacular.

Can Marça caves

It is a bit of a climb in the direction of the entrance of the Can Marça caves. Once you have climbed up you will have a beautiful view on the Mediterranean Sea. The mysterious yellow cave is worth seeing. In the heart of the cave a spectacular light and music show is put on. This show is given by a lake that lies inside the cave. The lake knows crystal clear waters. The cave is open the whole year and a tour is given every hour.

Playa d'en Bossa

Playa d'en Bossa is known by most because of the beautiful clubs and beach clubs. The most famous clubs in this area are Ushuaia and Space. Besides clubs, Playa d'en Bossa knows the longest beach of Ibiza. During the day everyone is enjoying the beach and at night the nightlife bursts free. Behind club Space lies the Agua Mar water park. This is a family park where the whole family can enjoy the wildest water slides.

Es Vedra

Es Vedra is a mysterious island in front of the coast of Ibiza. It is a protected nature reserve where no body can live except for goats, lizards and birds of prey. There are myths going round about the island and possible inhabitants. The island is only 2 kilometres away from Ibiza and there are different excursions to the island available.

Santa Eularia de Ríu

Santa Eulària des Ríu is a municipality where you can see the old Ibiza. You will find authentic Spanish white houses here. Especially the white church, Puig de Missa, looks beautiful and is solely located on a hill. The church was built around the 16th century and is absolutely photogenic. Of course you will find a lot of tourism in this area, just like on the rest of the island.

Make a bout tour on a Catamaran

Price wise this excursion is not meant for everyone but it is a lot of fun to have done. You can make a cruise around the island on a Catamaran. This is a 25 meter long beat that leaves from Ibiza Town. It is possible to discover other surrounding islands with the boat. Often parties are held on board with snacks, drinks and of course a DJ. Often a boat tour with a Catamaran takes all day. You only return back to the island in the evening.

Torre del Pirata

In the past the island Ibiza had a lot of problems with Pirates. In some villages you still find buildings that were supposed to protect the inhabitants of the island. One of those buildings that is still standing today is Torre del Pirata. It is a special watchtower which had the purpose to spot incoming pirates as soon as possible. The inhabitants of the island could then be warned in time to close all windows and doors. The tower lies high on a rock in Es Vedra. You can climb the tower and from here you have a beautiful view overlooking the island.

Torres de Baláfia

As explained above, some buildings were built for the sole purpose of protection against pirates. A good example for this is the village of Sant Llorenç. In the village there are two towers to be found that were supposed to warn the people for incoming pirates. You can even see from the architecture of the houses that the inhabitants were able to warn each other in case of danger. It is fun walking through the village and to look at the traditional building style of the houses. It is not possible to go inside the houses and take a look because they are still inhabited.

Es Caleta

Es Caleta is an unknown place on Ibiza. The island is full of beautiful bays, but unfortunately most have been overrun by mass tourism. Es Caleta is an exception. It knows an intimate atmosphere and there is only one restaurant. The bay is surrounded by high cliffs and this is why the view is spectacular. The restaurant offers the possibility to serve food and drinks on the beach. You don't even have to get up to make an order. One of the specialities of the restaurant is the Paella, you should definitely try this! On one of the cliffs you will find a UNESCO monument. You will find an ancient settlement of the Phoenicians here.
