The advantages of online storage

datacenterAlmost everything is in ‘the cloud’ nowadays. Think of things like Netflix and Spotify. You can listen to all of the music in the world, look at some of the most amazing series and you can do it without saving a single thing. Our storage is going the same way, a lot of our things are stored online. What are the benefits of doing this? We will take a look at that in this article.

Do not worry about losing something!

One big advantage of online storage is the fact that you can not lose all of your files. If, for instance, your computer crashes. If all of your documents and photos were stored on the hard drive of this computer, you most likely would have lost all of them. Maybe a technician would have been able to save them, but only if you were lucky!

If it would have been different, and you would have stored everything on an online drive, you would not have to worried about them. Because the files you find to be important only will be lost if the entire internet crashes down.

Access all around the world!

Another advantage is the fact that you can access all of the data from all around the world! This means that you are not limited to the placement of your hard drive. If you have stored your data using an online service, you can access all of the data on every place that has internet access.

Security.

Hard drives are fairly easy to crack in comparison to the online services. The security that is offered by services like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and iCloud are of very high quality. The best online security designers have worked on the security of these systems. It is very hard to update the security of a hard drive once it is made. Only security is up-to-date all of the time. Therefor it is much more reliable.

Sharing your data.

If you use online storage, it is very easy to share some of the data with other people. This can come in very handy. It is very easy to share a folder with photos from your vacation, for instance. The sharing of the data is very secure via online storage. All the data that you are sharing is secured in all kind of different ways.

Data recovery.

Most of the online services that offer online storage have a unique feature. This feature lets you restore data. This means that if you, for example, deleted some of your data by accident, you are able to restore it! So you never have to worry about losing your data again!

Some disadvantages as well.

Of course there are some things about online storage that are not that positive. Firstly, if you want to store all of your data, and you have a lot of data, it will cost you money. Most of the online storage services offer some free gigabytes, but if you want to store more than this, you are going to have to start paying money for the storage of your data.

Also, if someone knows your password, all of your data is accessible for them. Of course, you can prevent this in several ways, for instance by choosing a password that is not easily guessed and protecting this password. If you do these things, you do not have anything to worry about, but the possibility is present.

A thing that you must pay attention to if you want to use online storage, is the fact that not every online storage that you can find is trustworthy! There are some sites that may look like you can safely storage your things there, but in fact will use your data for the wrong things! Try to look up some information about the service you want to use, before you start using it.

A last disadvantage is the fact that it may take a while to store some of you files online! This is a result from the fact that you need a good internet connection to upload some big files. For instance, if you want to upload a movie, you are going to have to wait a long time! Saving something like this on a hard drive is a lot faster.

Conclusion.

If we look at the advantages and disadvantages of online storage, we can see that storing your data online can be very handy. You can access it from any place on the world, it is very secure and it will not get lost! But if you want to save all of your files online, the costs are going to be high, and the uploading of the files will take some time.

Therefor we think that it is recommended to use a combination of the 2 services. Storing your documents and photos online is very handy, and it will not cost you a lot of storage (money). But for the rest of your files, like movies, we think it is better to keep using your hard drive.
